What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do

I was sitting here thinking about what to write when I got distracted and do what most of us do when we don’t have or aren’t sure what to do.

I clicked on over to see what was happening on social media. Facebook to be exact.

Now, most of the time this is a bad idea and not beneficial. We usually end up wasting a lot of time soaking up a bunch of worthless information and sometimes engage in ridiculous arguments over stupid things.

Not Today

However, today it was exactly what I needed. Or it was at least beneficial. I went on an associate of mine’s page and he shared some great wisdom that applies to almost everything we do.

Especially when we’re stuck and not sure what to do.

When you can’t think of what to say, what to write or what to do, get started anyway.

Movement is a warmup lap for the brain. Once you’re moving you can always correct course. You’ll never ‘figure it out’ by thinking alone.

Matt Furey

For Example

Depending on your age, you will either remember when cars didn’t have power steering or you won’t. All cars used to have was the steering wheel and steering linkage that connected the two. This made it a workout to turn the wheels if the car wasn’t at least rolling a little bit slowly. But if you were rolling down the road it made it fairly easy to turn the wheels.

Then some mechanical genius came up with the idea of power steering. That’s what we all enjoy now when we get into our shiny automobiles. A pump assists the steering system and literally makes it as easy as turning the steering wheel with one finger.

But the same principles apply. Something has to be moving. And in this case, it’s the pump. Go out and unlock your steering column without starting your car and try to turn the wheel. Some of you won’t even be able to do it.

Move It Soldier

It doesn’t have to be complicated either.

Are you trying to lose weight but don’t know what exercises to do? Start moving anyway. Simply just start by walking around the block or two. However far you can safely. Plus, you’ll be amazed at the multiple benefits of walking.

Want to be a writer, or singer or musician? Then start writing, singing or playing an instrument.

Do you want another job or are you looking for love? Then start sending out your resume or posting on job boards. And put your profile out there on the dating sites.

No one is great at the beginning. No one. Sure, some people are gifted in certain areas of life. But even the greats will tell you how they struggled in the beginning if they’re honest. And most of them are. They’ll also tell you how they’re always striving to get better.

Nothing Happens

When you decide to do something nothing happens besides making the decision. You MUST put action behind it. Nothing is going to happen until you do.

And when’s the best time to take that action you ask?

Now.

get out while you can

Time Waits for No One

I heard a story today about a young man who was working with his grandpa laying bricks.

He was 15.

His grandpa was 80.

When they took their morning break for tea, as they were in England, he sat there frustrated and discouraged. That’s when he asked his grandpa “did you still think you’d be doing this at your age?”

Instead of taking offense and slapping his grandson, he brought the cup down from his lips and without looking at him, he simply said “quit today or you’ll be me tomorrow.”

Powerful words.

The kid was Steve Sims, author of the book Bluefishing: The Art of Making Things Happen. And I believe he quit laying bricks two days later.

Watch the interview Mike Searles, aka The Comeback Coach did with him below. And then grab his book. And then start making things happen in your life if there are things you keep putting off for the right time. I know there is.

The right time isn’t ever going to happen. I want you to know that. The right time is when you decide to take action.

You decide what you want. You’ll be able to figure out how you’re going to make it happen along the way. But you have to take that first step, first.

how the 5 second rule has saved over 100 lives

100 Lives Saved By 5 Second Rule

I bet this has happend to you because it’s happened to me several times. I have a piece of food in my hand that I’m getting ready to eat and boom, I drop it. But I hurry to get it picked up off the floor or ground before 5 seconds is up because we all know, after 5 seconds, that food is no longer consumable.

Not THAT 5 Second Rule

While that 5 second rule is a good one, I don’t know how much science is behind it. Nor do I know if it has saved any lives. I’m guessing probably not.

The 5 second rule that I’m talking about is the one that Mel Robbins discovered and wrote a book about. The 5 second rule that has saved at least 100 lives.

How do we know it’s saved neraly 100 lives and probably more by now? Because that’s how many people have written Mel to tell her that they were on the brink of ending it all, of committing suicide, when they decided to apply the 5 second rule.

How It Works

It’s so simple you probably won’t believe it. But you should. And you should also apply it because it works. And it works in more ways than one.

Steve Montgomery was ready to end his life. He was on top of the Mersey Ferry and decided it wasn’t worth living anymore. So Steve walked to the edge and started the countdown while he tried to work up the courage to jump.

5… 4… 3… 2… 1…

Move!

He didn’t jump. He shifted his mindset in an instant and decided to get help. The medical professionals discovered that he had low dopamine, severe depression and he lost 70 pounds.

Those 5 seconds literally saved Steve’s life. Steve didn’t really want to die, he just didn’t want to deal with what was beating him down and keeping him down day after day and night after night. That’s the case with most people who take their lives. Thank God for the 5 second rule and that he sought help.

If he hadn’t taken the time to countdown he would probably no longer be with us today.

It’s Merely A Tool

The 5 second rule is merely a tool. It’s a tool to push yourself in the moment to have the courage to do what you have to do. It works wonders in every aspect of life. You don’t have to be on the brink to reap the benefits.

Watch this brief video and then start putting it to use.

The end is never the end until it’s the end. You can always move on. ~Steve Montgomery.
